Why Go Wireless?Good question. If all you have is a single desktop PC, there are few advantages to going unwired. However, if you have a laptop, imagine how much nicer it would be to be able to move around your house or business and not worry about having to plug in a restricting Ethernet cable! If you have more than one PC, the advantages of unwiredness are even greater. Instead of poking holes in your walls or ceiling stringing cables to wherever you need network access, simply slide in a wireless card. Way fewer headaches, and less plaster dust in your hair. Who's Getting Unwired?More and more businesses and normal people like you, that's who. Check it out here. Where Can I Get the Stuff to Get Unwired?Of course, The WiMAX Guys can sell you secure, reliable commercial wireless equipment, but if you want to go Unwired at home, check out the gear at our partner, Amazon: Amazon.com Electronics All Electronics
Wireless Questions and Answers
What is Wi-Fi? Wi-Fi (say why-fie) stands for Wireless Fidelity,
and it's a standard for wireless networking.
And it's got nothing to do with Hi-Fi, or high fidelity
audio equipment. It's got to do with being free to roam around your house
or business, using the Internet without trailing a cord.
Most of the popular wireless LAN vendors - such as Linksys,
D-Link, Netgear,
Belkin,
and others - make Wi-Fi compatible equipment, otherwise known as 802.11.
There are lots of types of Wi-Fi equipment - 802.11a, 802.11b,
802.11g - but you don't need to worry about the numbers and letters. (If
you're interested, though, see Types of Wireless Networking
Systems for more info.)
Wi-Fi equipment communicates at various different speeds,
the most typical being 11Mbps (11 million bits per second - roughly 195
faster than a 56Kbps modem) and 54Mbps (also known as 54G). But you don't
need to worry about all that.
All you need to worry about is calling The WiMAX Guys. We
can help you get your wireless network installed and up and running fast! More information on this topic at:
What do you guys know? We know some tricks, and we know a lot about networking,
wired and wireless. We've set up wireless LANs like yours before, and
we've learned some (never all!) of the gotchas that can prevent your system
from working. Plus, we know how to figure out what's ailing your setup,
and how to find answers from other experts quickly. We can draw on the extensive networking expertise of our strategic partner, US Internet, to solve pretty much any networking problem you have.
We also know how to set up your wireless network so that
it is as secure as current technology permits. Did you know that if you
just take your system components out of the box, plug them in and don't
take extra security steps anyone near you (within 300 feet) with a wireless
setup can not only use your Internet connection, they may be able to see
files on your hard drives and steal them or change them? That doesn't
have to happen, and we know how to prevent it.
Plus, we can add capabilities to your wireless network that allows our trained technicians to spot trouble, and troublemakers, on your wireless network quickly, and to take the necessary action to secure your network. More information on this topic at:
Do I need security? I don't care if people use my Internet connection Would you care if they sent spam to a million people, or
used your connection to download kiddie porn, and it looked like you did
it?
Would you care if they got into your computer and erased
all your files?
Would you care if they could read sensitive financial documents
and use the information to steal your identity?
All these nasty things and much more can happen when someone
uses your wireless connection. And they're happening to people across
the country every day.
The WiMAX Guys can set you up so that the chances of anything
bad happening with your wireless network are very small. Current wireless
security technology is not strong enough to withstand a determined cracker
with lots of time on his hands, but these defenses are sufficient for
most situations. More information on this topic at:
Why can't I get a good wireless connection from every room in my office/house?
A wireless network runs using radio waves. Just like you
can't always get a radio station (like when you're going through a highway tunnel, for example) you're not always going to get great reception
everywhere you want it. Many things can interfere with radio reception,
and thus prevent you from getting a good wireless connection to your access
point.
The strength of the radio waves your access point and your
wireless network card are sending out decreases the further you move away
from the access point (called an AP). If your AP is in a remote closet in the basement of your office building, for example, you may not be able to get reception in a second floor conference room at the other end of the building. By the same token,
the strength of the radio waves decreases whenever they pass through anything
other than window glass. So the more things between you and your AP, the
weaker the signal. Intervening walls, stairs, metal beams or even people
will affect the signal.
The WiMAX Guys uses high-power commercial access points with tremendous range. This allows us to cover large areas with less equipment than other solutions. In addition, we can help reposition, reorient, or move your existing APs to help increase the reception of your network. Sometimes just moving
a few items in the immediate vicinity of your AP can help. In one installation
in a utility closet, moving the AP in front of rather than in back of
a large metal cooking pot more than doubled the strength of the signal.
We can do other things as well, including adding other units
that will rebroadcast the signal from your AP, extending your network
into hard to reach areas. Or we can, on some units, replace the stock
antennas with more powerful or more directional alternatives. More information on this topic at:
Where can I find public wireless hotspots? A hotspot is the same as a wireless access point (AP). A
public hotspot is offered by an individual (on purpose, or inadvertently)
or a company for use by the public. Some hotspot owners want to make money
by charging for their use. Others, like Dunn Bros. coffee shops, use them
to attract customers. Still others think wireless Internet access should
be free.
But the most troubling class of wireless hotspot users are
those poor souls who don't know they've opened up their Internet connection
and their computers to the whole world. If you're in that category, or
if you're not sure, give us a call right away and we'll get you fixed
up.

What are some other uses of wireless networking? You can use your Wi-Fi network to do all kinds of things
besides accessing the Internet. See this
